California homeowners should take personal responsibility for cleaning their air conditioning unit each year and have a tune-up performed to keep it in top running order.  It might even provide a twenty-five percent savings in electricity costs for the summer months. The tune-up is fairly simple but needs to be completed by an air conditioning professional. This is a great idea because the work can be guaranteed and they are knowledgeable about areas that might cause problems down the road.

The basic air conditioning system tune-up needs to be more than a check and adjustment. A true tune-up of an air conditioner needs to include things to make the old unit run like it was new again.  Listed below are the items that should be included in a good air conditioner tune-up. When you book your tune-up, make sure your air conditioning professional will carry out each of these steps. If not, find another company who will.

1.     The airflow of the system should be measured to make sure it is running at its full capacity and being as efficient as it can. Airflow is measured by static pressure, duct traverse, and air flow meter.

2.     The condenser needs to be cleaned. The outside unit needs to be cleaned with a spray foam cleanser with heavy duty cleaning action and allowed to sit for about fifteen minutes before rinsing to take off the outside grime and dirt that accumulates.

3.     Conditions for the inside and outside should be checked and measured. The technician will have specialized tools for this. Once the measurements are complete the technician will be able to set the correct refrigerant charge within the machine if it is not already done.

4.     The right amount of refrigerant charge is as important as the flow of air through the system. Once the air flow is set correctly, the condenser clean, the conditions are measured and refrigerant set, and it is time to add the refrigerant to the proper level. Expect this service to run more than $60 if it is done properly.  Many of the HVAC companies will offer the service to tune up and clean your air unit but they may not do all the required steps. It is better to pay the extra to have the unit properly cleaned and running correctly than to have it done poorly and end up having to replace the entire unit costing thousands of dollars.

Make sure to communicate with the air conditioning technician as they are working and watch to see that all the right things are being done on your air conditioner or split air conditioner.

It is also worth the effort to clean the unit on the inside of the home. The coils need to be cleaned with a spray cleaner the technician can provide and the filters need to be cleaned regularly by the homeowner. Regular cleaning of the area for dust will also protect the air conditioning unit from an over abundance of dirt and particles stuck in the coils. You can simply run a vacuum cleaner around the area to take out the dust and dirt.
