PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 29, 2013 - The global demand for Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) has been steadily increasing over the last 10 years. In 2000, global ABS demand stood at 4,560,559 tons, before increasing to 6,381,746 tons in 2010. A significant portion of the increase in demand for ABS was from the Asia Pacific region, and the same trend is expected to continue in the forecast period. The Asia Pacific region is expected to account for more than 80% of global ABS demand in 2020. Global demand for ABS is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2010–2020 to reach 10,909,987 tons in 2020

China has rapidly emerged as a global petrochemical products manufacturing hub. Production in China enjoys the advantage of lower operating costs than elsewhere, but currently China imports a considerable amount of ABS in order to produce ABS products such as household appliances, electrical and electronics products, and industrial and automotive applications. As a result there is huge scope for ABS capacity additions in China. Demand from China is currently driving the Asia Pacific market’s demand for ABS and it is expected to drive the demand in future.

Household appliances were followed by electrical and electronics, and the automotive sectors with 2,433,652 tons, 1,556,899 tons and 915,122 tons of demand, respectively, were the leading endues segments for ABS in 2010. Together they accounted for more than 75% of the global ABS demand. The industrial, construction, packaging and consumer products sectors accounted for the remainder of global end-use demand for ABS in 2010. A similar trend for end-uses of ABS is expected to continue throughout the forecast period to 2020.

ABS, as a thermoplastic, is undergoing innovations from the manufacturers. Thus ABS is finding new applications in the existing sectors as well as in new sectors. Polycarbonate and polysulphonate blends of ABS have been in existence for quite some time. Now other compounds like Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT), Nylon 6, and Liquid Crystalline Polymer (LCP) are being blended with ABS for different applications in the market. It is this constant innovation in the field of ABS end-use applications which is expected to further increase its demand in future.
