Pool Plaster Care
Pool plaster’s lifespan can range from 10 to 15 years, which is mainly dependent on the care given to it. Due to the headache and cost of re-plastering a pool it is important to note some basic facts about pool plaster care.
The three big problems that occur on plaster are, etching, staining, and cracking. Etching are small pits or pock marks that develop in the plaster. They can make the plaster uncomfortable and rough. Calcium build-up is basically having too much calcium in the water. Excess calcium will deposit on the walls creating a bumpy or build-up surface that is rough and cannot be removed by normal brushing. To remove it usually means taking off plaster too. Etching and Calcium build-up develop due to poor water chemistry, which also provides a great place for algae to grow. Staining is cause in the pool from minerals and excess metals in the water. Organic debris can also stain or dull your plaster over time. Cracking is caused in pools a couple of different ways. One way this happens is structural problems, even though that is very rare. Here in Texas cracking of plaster usually occurs from plaster being exposed to the hot weather due to water levels dropping in the pool.
In order to combat these problems it is important to pay attention to the details of pool care. It is important to keep water at appropriate levels. In the scorching Texas heat a pool can lose around two inches of water on a weekly basis. Keep a water hose handy to keep your pool plaster from being exposed for long periods of time.
Keeping the Saturation Index of the pool water at balanced levels (-0.3 to +0.3) is a vital part of pool care. Prolonged low pH, low alkalinity cause a corrosive water state that can soften the plaster in your pool. Low calcium hardness can cause aggressive water that will pull calcium out of your plaster and cause it to slowly erode. Minerals and excess metals in the water deposit themselves in pool plaster and stain the plaster. Adding the proper chemicals on a regular basis can expand the life of your pool plaster and save you money.

Brushing is a also very important for the pool plaster and should be done on a regular basis. Brushing can keep your plaster smooth and remove the small corrosives before they attach to the plaster. It can also keep algae from grabbing a stronghold on the tiny pockets of pool plaster.
