Jan. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- The 32nd FAI World Gliding Championship (WGC) was completed with closing ceremonies on January 19, 2013.  The competition was held in Adolfo Gonzales Chaves, Argentina.  Over 80 high ranked pilots from 22 countries participated in three classes.  USA pilot and EMS CEO Sean Franke brought home a 6th place overall position, two places better than his finish at the last WGC. Top ten finishers received a Championship Diploma. Only 25 US pilots have finished in the top ten over the last 60 years.

Gliders also known as sailplanes are efficient flying machines. Computer engineered laminar flow airfoils and cantilevered composite-fiber wings carry pilots up to 170 mph.  With no engine, altitude is traded for distance at extraordinary rates.  A modern racing sailplane converts one foot of altitude into fifty feet of forward progress.

Sailplane pilots enjoy a panoramic views through a streamlined canopy, comfortable semi-reclining seats, controlling the ship with slight and almost automatic pressure on flight controls. In addition, glide-slope computers, GPS navigation systems, and sensitive rate of climb instruments provide positional information that helps the pilot navigate and optimize flight speeds.

Sailplane racing is a competitive sport.  Pilots must find the best lift sources on course and optimize cruise speeds for lift conditions, so in-flight speeds typically range between 60 and 100 mph.  Speed can reach up to 170 mph.   Changing flight speeds to match conditions is required to be on top of the daily contest score sheet.

In addition to using GPS technology for in-flight navigation, racing sailplanes also carry GPS loggers that record the entire flight. This information is used by the contest scoring team to calculate speeds and verify contestants rounded turnpoints properly. Mandatory turnpoints are assigned by contest officials each day covering typically over 100 miles.
