Pueblo Grande Museum | Ancient Technology Day FREE Event!

Jan. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- On Saturday March 9, 2013 the Pueblo Grande Museum, located at 4619 E. Washington in Phoenix and through the Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary will host the 3rd Annual Ancient Technology Day event.  Doors open at 10am and close at 3pm.  The day’s event will include an array of fun including:  tossing the atlatl (spear), watching artists’ demonstrations in pottery making, basket weaving, rock art, flint-napping and more!  Attendees will also enjoy making their own Native American crafts, snacking on Indian fry bread, and agave roast made in the traditional way.

Join Pueblo Grande Museum for a hands-on experience at Ancient Technology where visitors can try their hand at throwing an atlatl (spear), create their own petro glyph, weave their own cloth, and try roasted agave slow-cooked the traditional way, in an earthen oven.  Artists will be on hand to demonstrate how the Hohokam people created various technologies.  For instance, the museum will have people demonstrating flint-knapping (making of arrowheads), pottery, shell and stone jewelry, weaving and more.  Admission to the event and museum are free for the day.  

Ancient Technology Day is also an official Arizona SciTech Festival event and thanks to a grant from Phoenix Suns Charities, the 2013 event will include live entertainment and a behind-the-scenes tour and archaeology presentation by our Museum Curator Holly Young and City of Phoenix Archaeologist Laurene Montero, about the prehistoric and historic archaeology of downtown Phoenix, and must more.  In addition to the demonstrators, performances, and presentations children can enjoy free craft activities and games.  Learn about native desert foods from the Sal River Maricopa Indian Community’s traditional kitchen, and fry bread will be available for purchase.

Pueblo Grande Museum is an archaeological site museum and repository operated by the City of Phoenix since 1929.   They collect, preserve, research, interpret, and exhibit cultural materials from the site of Pueblo Grande and the Greater Southwest.
