Myers reviews a century of the Irish cultural memory of the Great War or WWI. He considers the experience of the returning veterans, war-time remembrance,  celebrations and otherwise culture building memorials, and the impact it had on Ireland's independence. The first four chapters cover the 20 years after the war, while the fifth covers the next 40 and the last chapter from 1987 to the present. A section of high-quality black and white plates is included.  Myers argues in the end that the memory of the Great War was one of several competing national identities and one that fell in and out of favor before surfacing again in recent years. Myers explores a number of aspects of cultural memory, which add a sense of humanity and dynamism to the subject that differentiates this project from other memory studies.  Recommended for research libraries.
