The Fully-Redesigned 2014 Mazda6 Mid-Size Sedan Has Arrived at Biggers Mazda

Key to the new 2014 Mazda6 is the SkyActiv 2.5L four-cylinder, which improves fuel economy and performance by being much lighter than previous Mazda6 models. Paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the engine is capable of producing 184 hp. The vehicle is so new that the EPA has not released official fuel-economy estimates, but the Mazda sedan will offer about 37 mpg on the highway.

Also available is a turbocharged 2.2L four-cylinder diesel SkyActiv engine that’s capable of 280 and 309 lb-ft of torque in standard and high-powered versions. Again, official fuel economy estimates have not been released, but, according to the European mode, it should get around 50 mpg highway.


Besides the new SkyActiv powertrain, the Mazda6 truly innovates with a new system used to capture energy called i-Eloop. Normal cars build up energy while the energy is accelerating, which is lost when the vehicle decelerates. In the Mazda6, this energy is converted into electricity that gets stored in a capacitor, rather than a car battery which isn’t designed to take quick bursts of energy.


The electricity stored in the capacitor can then be used to power the air conditioning, lights, or any other power accessories in the car. This leads to a 5% increase in fuel economy and also allows drivers to have full access to all of the vehicle’s horsepower.
