Then my old teamamte and best friend Vincent is murdered by another power. My carefully constructed solitude crumbles around me as the Police, the Powered Crime Agency and the rest of the team search for answers.
All I want is to find out who killed him without having to dredge up too much pain from the past, but when the super-powered killer comes after me, all I am left with are nightmares."
In a world much like our own, people born with extraordinary powers are called 'heroes'. They have been part of society for hundreds of years and in the mid-to-late twentieth century it became popular for them to band together into teams to dispense justice against criminals, powered or otherwise.
That was until a terrifying incident in the UK forced a change in the law, requiring all heroes to identify their birth identity, register on a database and to never use their powers in public or risk a prison sentence.
One such team, The Pulse, was the darling of Element City. Then one day in 1993, they suddenly split and none of them took up heroics again.
Eighteen years later, with the new law in place, Martin Molloy, or "Roadblock" as he used to be known, is a night security guard who avoids contact with people and suffers panic attacks in crowded places. When his best friend Vincent "The Seeker" is brutally murdered by another power, he is forced to face the true reason the team split while fending off the Police, two very intrusive agents from the Powered Crime Agency and varying amounts of hassle from his old teammates over a small, blank notebook Vincent bequeathed him.
As his life collapses around him he finds himself next on the killers' list, having to remember the last days of the team to try and figure out what is happening, and on the receiving end of a very unlikely source of help.
The past is strong, it weighs him down, but he must find strength from the moments he was at his weakest to be able to face up to the reality of today before the truth of what happened destroys all their lives.
