C&S Wholesale Grocers Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Participates in National Day of Service

Jan. 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Keene, NH – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said that, “Life’s most persistent and nagging question is ‘What are you doing for others?’” This year, many people participated in volunteer projects across the country to honor Dr. King with a National Day of Service. To take part and to keep his legacy alive, employees at three C&S Wholesale Grocers locations were engaged in community service, in:

·         Keene, NH  ̶  employees read books and participated in craft projects with approximately 80 children at the local Head Start center.

·         Chester, NY  ̶  employees read and crafted with approximately 87 preschoolers at RECAP Western Orange County Head Start.

·          Kapolei, HI  ̶  employees read with approximately 120 first graders at Honowai Elementary School.

In all three locations, each child was given the new books to keep.  The books focused on the topics of diversity, inclusion and celebrating differences.

“C&S is proud to join with citizens around the country to give back through community service,” said Gina Goff, Senior Director of Community Involvement.  “Dr. King’s teachings continue to inspire us to make a difference in small, but meaningful ways.”

This initiative was coordinated with First Book, a national nonprofit partner of C&S.  Since 2007, support from C&S to First Book has resulted in over 200,000 new books being placed into the hands of children in more than a dozen C&S communities. Hundreds of schools, early childhood, afterschool and non-profit programs have been connected to First Book’s resource pipelines, and First Book has engaged C&S employees as volunteers, mentors and readers.
