Thomas N. depicts what can all too often be found in impoverished nations; corruption, abuse, and terror. It is not until Ý is an adult that his life seems to get better. This however, is not to last as he discovers he is actually headed for darker times. His marriage is marred by infidelity and he manages to bury himself in a mountain of debt. He becomes convinced that reconciling things with his wife will put him back on the right track and sets out to do so. This proves hard to do though as Ý must resort to desperate tactics to regain the affection of his wife.
Eventually, the couple is reunited and Ý’s faith in God is restored and strengthened throughout the process. In spite of this, Ý and his wife still live a desolate and meager life. Awakening examines the long term effects of an unfortunate life, the aspects of which are highly relatable.
