LEGENDARY JAZZ GREAT JOHN HANDY TURNS 80 FEBRUARY 24TH & JAZZ HERITAGE CENTER CELEBRATES ITS 5th ANNIVERSARY
WHO: Living jazz legend and tenor saxophonist John Handy; JAZZ 91.1 radio personality and jazz historian Sonny Buxton; Jazz pianist and bandleader Glen Pearson; Guitarist Calvin Keys; Bassist Ron Belcher; Artist and curator Nancy Hom; Jazz Heritage Center Chair of the Board Christine Harris.
WHAT: Tribute to Jazz Legend John Handy for his 80th birthday, on Sunday February 24th. Event will include a VIP Champagne Reception that will be followed by a musical Tribute emceed by JAZZ 91.1 radio personality Sonny Buxton. Performances include a special appearance by John Handy, pianist Glen Pearson, Guitarist Calvin Keys, Bassist Ron Belcher and more, Artist, curator and former Kearney Street Executive Director Nancy Hom will curate a John Handy exhibit opening in the Koret Heritage Lobby that day.
WHEN: Sunday, February, 24, 2013: 2 PM. Champagne VIP Reception; 3-5 PM Musical Tribute
WHERE: 1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco: 2 PM in the Jazz Heritage Center’s Koret Heritage Lobby and 3PM in Yoshi’s Jazz Club off the Koret Heritage Lobby
WHY: The Fifth Anniversary fundraising event will provide funds for the Jazz Heritage Center’s educational programs including a new program, “Conversations with Sonny,” to capture the voices of musicians, club owners, and fans who were part of the great era of Jazz in San Francisco and who continue to be part of the scene. The Jazz Heritage Center’s mission is to capture the story of jazz in San Francisco, and especially in the Fillmore for current and future generations.
