People come by the store every day and mention how this was a hangout for them when they were teenagers back in the 1960’s and 1970’s according to Andra Shortt, the manager of the store. Some photos of that era were donated by Jeff Manning and are on display in the store. Jeff is the son of the man that originally built the building back in the 1960’s.
The format for Leo’s Donuts and Coffee House is based on earlier versions of similar businesses. “We wanted a place that served fresh donuts all day and the best espresso coffee products that we could find”. Said Shortt. The owners also wanted a comfortable place for customer to relax with friends or meet with customers. The store features free wifi , modern seating for up to twenty people and a bright dining room.
A drive-thru was added by a previous owner, something that didn’t exist back when the building was a Dog N Suds” Restaurant in the 60’s and 70’s.
This location was selected primarily based its proximity to Fort Knox Kentucky. This has proven to be good decision according to Andra Shortt. “We have a tremendous amount of loyal customers that are affiliated with Fort Knox during the week and on weekends we have a lot of families enjoying the place”, the local support has been unbelievable as well” , she said.
Going into the third month the business is going strong and gaining new customers daily with plans now to add some live entertainment on the patio this spring along with special promotions like the family day on February 2, 2013.
