As a newly published author, she was told of a great many mistakes new authors make, and was advised to find a book doctor to fix all the errors within her own book. The cost of a book doctor was beyond her means, and she decided she would continue to make the same errors with future writings if she didn't learn how to fix them. It took two long months to rewrite the book, which went on to win Editor's Choice and Rising Star awards through the publishing company. In the following months, Ramos continued to research out all the mistakes new authors made, several that she found while reading self-published books. It became clear that many errors were based purely from the lack of knowing any better. She began to distribute her notes and consult other indie authors until one day a new author made the brilliant suggestion to put all the notes in a book for others to read. Surviving the Writing Apocalypse was started the next day. The first sections of the book deal with point of view intrusions: point of view review, author intrusion, foresight, and head-hopping, all which Ramos calls the biggest errors new authors make. Further sections include the misuse of bold lettering, all capital lettering, italics, scene breaks, characterization, branding, dialogue tags and more. The physical book will also feature a section on collaborative thinking. Ramos states, "Self-published authors are held with their heads below water due to the stigmata that they only self-publish because they couldn't cut it in traditional publishing." The book is based on industry guidelines, though, Ramos states there are no rules in writing only guidelines, and when done effectively, can stand to be broken. The purpose of the manual is to allow new authors to see what the guidelines are and determine for themselves if they can break them, or if they should be followed. Ramos holds to her belief that many books can effectively break the rules if it is done with finese and done consistently throughout the book. After the book was written a website, The Writing Apocalypse, was created to be an all-in-one resource stop for new and experienced self-published authors alike. The website features books called "survivors" that have passed the scrutiny of two editors/readers for content and grammar. Things like excessive use of foresight, head-hopping, and confusing point of view changes seem to be the biggest errors authors make according to one editor at Blackbird LSD. Too much use of these and a book is disqualified from being listed as a "survivor." The editor went on the say that some books break several rules, but they are done in such a way that it makes sense and flows well, these books are not disqualified since they were effectively written. The website has a page for resources which looks like an advertising page, which Ramos sates is just that. Top notch small companies are invited to list their services on the page so authors don't have to hunt around through search engines to find them. There is a category for everything: beta readers, graphic designers, publicity, editors, formatters and more. Ramos states, "If you do something that can help out an author, we encourage it to be listed." The manual had a soft release in December and will now go into full-fledged publicity mode. Ramos can be found speaking next month Feb 9, 2013 at the High Desert Chapter of the California Writer's Club at 10 am, about the top point of view errors authors make. She also boasts that her manual will be used at several writer's workshops as a reference guide across Northern America.
