Nonprofits May Be Misinformed About Tax Laws

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 18, 2013 - Mableton, Ga.- As the founder of Agapé Christian Counseling Center (ACCC), Ieshea Hartwell was under the impression that any business conducted under the ACCC umbrella was tax-exempted. She soon realized she was misinformed when she sat down with a representative from Quick Tax Professionals (QTP), who advised her of terms such as Unrelated Business Income Tax.

Carolyn Turner, owner of QTP with over 30 years of experience in tax preparation, shared that a nonprofit’s income is taxable depending on whether the activities are related to the nonprofit’s purpose.

“Obviously, I had no clue about the tax laws in the nonprofit realm,” Hartwell states. “It was great to speak with a tax professional and get the correct information.”

After her sit down with QTP, Hartwell wondered how many other new nonprofit executives or small business owners aren’t equipped with the facts about taxes and decided to host an event to fill in the holes. ACCC’s women’s program, Women of Worth Ministries, is presenting a tax & networking workshop titled “Taxing Your NETworth Right” at the QTP office in Mableton on Saturday, January 26th at 11am-1pm. This event is free and there will be food, games, and prizes, too.

ACCC is a nonprofit organization that focuses on the counseling needs to adult individuals, couples and groups and hosts free monthly workshops for the community on various subjects. QTP is an income tax preparation service and business consulting agency.
