International Mapping Associates & Equator Maps have released the Gettysburg Battle Map app for the iPad. This application provides a visual guide to understanding the daily sequence of events that took place during a critical 1863 Civil War Battle. It is a must-have app for Civil War enthusiasts.

In January, the Antietam Battle app became available on iTunes for consumers. The second in a series of Civil War titles to be released by Equator Maps, it is based on work created for the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies at Frederick Community College with help from expert historians at the National Park Service. The Android tablet equivalent will be available in March.

The seven chapters of this application provide a rich understanding of the battle. The initial chapters show the context of the battle in and around Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Confederate General Robert E. Lee had led his army through the Shenandoah Valley to begin his second invasion of the north. Lee was met by Union General George G. Meade’s army of the Potomac in the town of Gettysburg. After several days of fighting, Lee’s army was defeated. The battle proved to be the turning point in the war, ending Lee’s invasion of the North.

Other chapters show how important regional town centers such as Harpers Ferry, York, and Fredericksburg played a role. And how the terrain around the town of Gettysburg affected the course of the battle.

The app features:

·       Seven stages of the battle

·       Animated troop movements

·       Audio descriptions enhance easy learning

·       Detailed base maps show 1860’s period terrain and geography

·       Post-battle troop movements are included

The Gettysburg Battle Map app will provide a clear and concise account of this Civil War battle.
