Nissan Models Reduce Use of Rare Earth Elements
Rare earth elements consist of a group of 17 metals that make up the powerful magnets used on electric motors of EVs and hybrids. Nevertheless, the extensive use of them has become a growing concern.
These elements aren't quite as scarce as the name would imply, buy they are difficult and dirty to extract and refine from the Earth's crust. That’s why Nissan is devotingeffort to getting the most out of every gram of them.
New Nissan LEAF Motor Cuts Rare Earth Element by 40%
Dysprosium is a vital component of magnets found in the electric motors. It is also one of the toughest to extract, making it one of the most expensive. However, Nissan has presented a new electric motor design that uses 40% less of the element.
Engineers coated each crystal within the Nissan LEAF motor magnet with a layer of dysprosium in a process known as grain boundary diffusion. This way, they achieved the same amount of heat resistance while saving approximately 40 grams of the rare element.
Innovative Nissan LEAF Offers Superior Efficiency
The Nissan LEAF is one of the most impressive vehicles on the market. It uses a dedicated EV platform with batteries housed in the floor for optimum weight distribution. LEAF’s body design includes a rigid frame, which helps provide greater body rigidity compared to a conventional compact car.
