EGAN Medical specializes in discounted yet high-quality, name-brand maternity & other prenatal care products, medical equipment and supplies, home health, mobility & bath safety equipment, vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements.
The was company founded in 2011 as a brick-and-mortar storefront. It wasn't until May of 2012 that the store was closed in favor of an intetnet-only business model centered around the company's online storefront, EganMedical.com.
The company was founded by the son of the founder/CEO of EGAN Healthcare Services, one of Louisiana's leading providers of a wide array of in-home care services.
EGAN Healthcare is particularly established as providers of hospice, medical staffing and home health care services in Metairie, Covington, Franklinton and Bogalusa, Louisiana -- four of the primary markets from which EGAN Medical's customers were drawn.
Customers were outraged upon learning that the low-cost medical supply store was closing. However, a compromise was reached between EGAN Medical and its customers: the more popular product lines offered by EGAN would be available for purchase in-store at a location just a few miles from the original store location.
1116 W. 21st Avenue in Covington serves as home to the EGAN Wellness Clinic, EGAN Skin Care Spa, EGAN Healthcare Northshore and EGAN Hospice. The other EGAN companies agreed to allow EGAN Medical to maintain a scaled-down presence there following the move.
This solution helped accommodate those who would rather walk into a store, touch, feel, or try-on a product for size before actually buying it. This is important to customers buying compression stockings and orthopedic products such as braces, supports, splints and boots. It can be particularly useful when shopping for maternity supports such as the award-winning Prenatal Cradle® due to a woman's tendency to expand during pregnancy.
EGAN pledged to offer free shipping to Louisiana residents, regardless of order size or weight. Thus, customers now have the choice of going to the office located at 1116 W. 21st Ave. in Covington to pick up their items, or have them delivered to their home free-of-charge.
EganMedical.com, the online medical equipment and supply storefront launched in May of 2011. For the remainder of that year, it hardly registered as a blip on the radar, with in-store sales accounting for the overwhelming majority of its revenue.
It took approximately one year from the site's launch for web sales to grow to the point where the company could afford to close the brick-and-mortar storefront altogether.
However, once the store had been closed and the company finally able to devote the majority of its resources to developing its web presence, the strategy began to show promise. While at first sales were sporadic, as the months passed, the number of orders being placed online increased, as did the volume of the orders.
Before long the company had launched a medical equipment & company news blog on the Blogger platform. The idea was to inform customers of such developments as when products were on back-order, when they'd be back in-stock, new arrivals and so forth. The blog came in handy before, during and after Hurricane Issac.
EGAN later decided to launch a separate blog with the Wordpress platform to inform consumers about new product launches, information, sales, deals, coupons, and so forth. The EGAN Medical Equipment Product Blog has a completely different focus than does the Company News blog, hence why the two were never consolidated.
For a company widely expected to fail by many aware of the strategic shift, the client list began to take on some impressive names including but not limited to:
• A United Way affiliate organization
• Lowe's Home Improvement
• The TSA (Transportation Security Administration)
• The United States Air Force and others
By August of 2012 EGAN Medical was clearly gaining momentum and even the company's biggest doubters were beginning to question their own skepticism.
By expanding its reach from a local market in which it had considerable brand authority to a global environment, EGAN Medical had multiplied its potential customer base thousands of times over. When the Christmas shopping season rolled around, EGAN Medical had firmly entrenched itself as a major player on the global stage, and was increasingly becoming a force to be reckoned with.
Online sales from 2012 alone more than doubled all of 2011's totals including both in-store and web sales, as well as in-store sales from 2012 from both the original storefront and its physical replacement in a building shared by a number of other semi-affiliated firms.
On January 17, 2013, the company was made aware of its nomination for the Top Medical Equipment Sites award, barely making the cut as the 20th of 20 nominees selected to be in the running.
The list can be viewed at the following URL: http://www.top20sites.com/
