Will illusion occupy our time unneccessarily?

An illusion is a picture within our mind. This picture is pieced together from information we know; each individual will create a different illusion as we don’t all collect the same information we call knowledge.

What is an Illusion? One dictionary defines it as: An unreal perception or belief, a deceptive appearance or impression. Another dictionary defines it as: “something that a person wrongly supposes to exist or a false belief about the nature of something.”

QUOTE: “Oh, how powerfully the magnet of illusion attracts.” (Gutzkow)

An illusion is a picture within our mind. This picture is pieced together from information we know; each individual will create a different illusion as we don’t all collect the same information we call knowledge. If we don’t know the full facts we still make a picture. The fewer facts that we know, then the bigger the illusion!

QUOTE: “Half the work that is done in this world is to make things appear what they are not.” (E.R. Beadle)

Allow this short story to illustrate how we can integrate illusion into a space that should command reality.

ILLUSION?

I get on the subway in Sindorim. The train is totally empty, what a pleasant surprise. We are leaving Dangsan and crossing the Han River when all of a sudden a strange feeling comes up. The close facades of the skyhigh apartment buildings are fading away. The silhouette of the big city glitters mischievously in the dusk, reflected in the dark waters of the Han River. It looks as if the subway hovers across the river. The noise of the city is left on the southern bank of the river.

Somehow the impression of an illusion gets stronger and the feeling of irreality crawls up my chest. Somehow it reminds me of the short story of Friedrich Duerrenmatt, about the train ride that never ends...

Life is real but an illusion. Is life just a chain of dreams, fragmented and interrupted only by naps?

The feeling of irreality is still floating around when the subway train arrives at Hapjeong station. Passengers are disappearing through the sliding doors and other commuters are rushing inside. Two more stations... Sinchon... I have to get off. The door opens, one step, I bump into a stranger, who impatiently tries to get in. One more step, I leave the protection of the subway car. Back to reality.

QUOTE: “Pleasure can be supported by an illusion; but happiness rests upon truth.

(Chamfort, Sebastien-Roch Nicolas De, 1741-1794 French Writer Journalist Playwright)

If you were to devote time, energy, effort and toil into a project perhaps even a dream, at what point would you draw a line at the venture being a waste of time? Would that dream be then called an illusion?

Preparation is underestimated. Everything is within our grasp should we prepare for it properly. We must expect failure before triumph and not allow a hiccup to prevent the full task being completed.

We dream of a ‘better’ life, but we never prepare enough to accomplish the task. A dream is an illusion, yet to reach that goal we need to split the one task into multiple smaller tasks, all of which are more easily attainable.

Over 150 years ago a structural engineer pondered over how to put a bridge over Niagara Falls. Of course he was restricted to the technology he had at his disposal. His ultimate aim was to extend a cable across the upper falls, but the danger was all too evident.

To cut a long story short he arranged for a skilled kite flyer to extend his kite across the ravine. Once he had a piece of string that extended across, he used the string to pull across a thin chord. Using the thin chord he pulled across a thicker chord. Using the thicker chord he pulled across some thin rope, then a thicker rope. Using the thicker rope he pulled across a thin metal rope. It wasn’t long before he’d built a suspension bridge.

Proof if you ever needed it that preparation will assist anyone in reaching their dream. Had there been no preparation the possibility of a bridge would have remained an illusion, therefore just a picture in the mind. Imagine a group of men trying to throw across the metal cable… This is the picture you need to remember when you’re trying to give any credence to an illusion.

You cannot base your life around a ‘picture in the mind’. Practically every person that you may ask this question, “What aspect of life do you what to have enjoyed most during your life?” Would reply in various ways but ultimately the concept of happiness would be the answer.

Yet strangely they do not consider how best to achieve happiness. They’d prefer to go in search of an illusion and try throwing a metal rope across a mile wide ravine.

Would you spend any time trying to change the position of President Kennedy before his assassination? Then waste no time trying to alter the past, even if it was only yesterday… It is now only an illusion.

Would you spend time trying to imagine what you would do when you’ve won the lottery? It is not true it is only an illusion. The future has not happened it will always just be an illusion.

Everything can be put right in the present moment. You can put right a wrong that happened yesterday. You can plan and sow good seeds that will manifest tomorrow.

Do not give any energy to an illusion, it is wasted. All your efforts should be concentrated on the present moment.

It is your personal philosophy that determines how you deal with illusion. Allow this short example to paint a picture of how you should prioritize the present moment.
