Manitowoc Author Meet and Greet

Jan. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Manitowoc, wi, January 16, 2013:  On February 2nd, Liysa Callsen will available at LaDeDa Books and Beans at 1624 New York Ave. Manitowoc, WI. 54220 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. She will be autographing copies of her new book. Tell ‘em – the memoir of a girl whose first language is not the spoken word a self-published book edited by Kathryn Gahl.  Those wishing to participate in a book discussion can sign up during the event.

More about the book: Liysa Callsen was lost the day she was born. Her ears worked. Those of her parents did not. Hence her first language was not the spoken word, it was American Sign Language. That was 1972. Since then, the bridge between the hearing world and the Deaf has widened. After graduating from high school in Livonia, Michigan, Liysa went on to earn a degree in Paralegal from Madonna University also, in Livonia. Those skills took her to Chicago. There, she became homesick, and realized she yearned for the world of the Deaf. Imagine her good luck to subsequently marry a Deaf man and have two children who can hear.

However, being married to someone Deaf is entirely different than having Deaf parents forcing Callsen to reflect on her childhood and the obstacles she triumphed - an unknown community and the ignorance from a hearing world, language and self-awareness. She writes in a way that is relatable for many, a universal story that will touch those that have no connection to deafness.
