Gulf War Vet Uses Obama Calendars to Raise Money for the Homeless and Less Fortunate. It is more blessed to give than to receive is his motto. The first event will take place on Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia, SC.

On Friday, January 18, 2013, Former First Lieutenant William J. Simmons, Sr. will be selling Obama Calendars to benefit the very organizations that assisted him in time of need in the years of 1998 through 2002. After the Gulf War, William J. Simmons, Sr., like many Veterans returned back to the U.S. with various ailments, concerns, and unbelievable situations. Before the Gulf War, Simmons was married and was working for Westinghouse – Savannah River Site as a Health Physicist and then he was promoted to an Associate Scientist. Simmons realized that things have changed within him and wanted to solve the issues. Thus, he and other Vets created and supported the National Gulf War Resource Center. Simmons began to fight for Gulf War Veterans and other era Veterans that has now spanned over 20 years.
During these 20 years, Simmons has gone from a Gulf War Hero and Advocate to living at the Alston Wilkes Veterans Home in Columbia, SC, to getting assistant and giving assistance to the Oliver Gospel Mission, the Salvation Army, and so many other organizations to try to make ends meet. Simmons spent some 9 months in the Alston Wilkes Veterans Home for Veterans.

Simmons says it is now time to give back to at least 2 organizations that has done so much for him and other veterans and civilians.

On Friday, January 18, 2013 from 8 AM until 5 PM at the Dorn Veterans Hospital Columbia, SC, Former First Lieutenant William J. Simmons, Sr. will be selling Obama calendars as a fundraiser. For every calendar sold, he will be donating $1 to the Alston Wilkes Veterans Home and $1 to the Oliver Gospel Mission of Columbia, SC. Simmons believes that β€œIt Is More Blessed To Give Than It Is To Receive,” and to never forget the bridges that you have crossed.

As of today, Simmons has donated funds in advance to the Alston Wilkes Representative at hwall@alstonwilkessociety.org, and to the Oliver Gospel Mission at receipt number 11668259.

Simmons states that this event is a homecoming event for him as well because he use to work at cthe Dorn Veterans Hospital as a work study student for Ms. Karen Ford in the late 80’s while attending the University of South Carolina and he enjoyed the position very much. Simmons is now a Science Teacher in the Horry County Schools which takes pride in the area of philanthropy along with being the 3rd largest educational system in South Carolina.
