A total of 481 small and mid-sized Sacramento County businesses were sold last year, an increase of about 6.4% over the 452 deal count posted for the county in 2011, according to the BizBen Index in its monthly business-for-sale transactions report.

Jan. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- Dublin, CA (January 11, 2013)—A total of 481 small and mid-sized Sacramento County businesses were sold last year, an increase of about 6.4% over the 452 deal count posted for the county in 2011, according to the BizBen Index in its monthly business-for-sale transactions report. Also up was the sale tally last month when 49 deals were closed, compared to 39 sales posted the previous December.

“This positive report covering Sacramento County’s small business sale volume, combined with the improvement in the state’s business transfer rate last year is the good news we need heading into 2013,” said Peter Siegel, MBA, Founder and President of BizBen.com, parent of the BizBen Index. “A more active market benefits buyers, owners/sellers as well as the state’s business intermediaries and other professionals who serve the market.”

Siegel said that 14,368 small and mid-sized California businesses changed hands last year, an increase from the 13,948 deals completed during 2011. “But the state’s business-for-sale market still is in recovery mode following the recession. And the 2012 count is still short of the 21,689 total that was posted in 2008, right before the sudden drop in business sales activity resulting from the mortgage and banking crises.”

Of December’s Sacramento County deal total, 30 of the businesses are located in the city of Sacramento. Orangevale and Rancho Cordova each recorded four transactions and there were three deals each in Carmichael, Elk Grove and Folsom.

The BizBen Index tally of Sacramento County sales by city last year (found at http://www.bizben.com/stats/sacramento-county.php) is: Folsom: 42, Isleton: 2, Orangevale: 24, Rancho Cordova: 33, Sacramento: 304, Citrus Heights: 17, Carmichael: 13, Elk Grove: 21, Elverta: 3, Fair Oaks: 10, Galt: 8, Rio Linda: 1, Walnut Grove: 1, Citrus Heigts: 1, North Highlands: 1

“It’s encouraging that many of California’s business buyers and sellers are learning how to address some of the challenges that prevented people from completing transactions successfully over the past few years,” according to Siegel. “It’s one of the reasons that sales rates are slowly improving. “

He added, “But two of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face in the business-for-sale marketplace are the widespread mood of uncertainty--like a grey cloud hanging over the market, and the difficulties getting access to business purchase loans that are needed to help fund transactions. While some banks and other financial institutions are starting to serve the business-for-sale market, too many entrepreneurs still are stumbling over the financing step as they try to reach their goals of a completed escrow.”

The rate of small business sales is an important indicator of the state’s economic health, according to Siegel. “If small businesses are to grow and provide more jobs, they need to be transferred to new, often more energetic ownership when the current owner is ready to retire or undertake some other enterprise.” He defines a small business as a company that sells for $2 million or less.
