Pressurised systems and panels requiring antifreeze need regular maintenance that make them too expensive to run explains Denis in the video. ‘REM doesn’t use these evacuated tube collectors because we believe the maintenance is too heavy and it is the maintenance charge that determines whether solar pays or doesn’t pay.’
The other very important issue to consider is the water or heating system in your home. ‘Put the wrong type of solar thermal in the wrong type of system and it might even kill you,’ explains Denis. ‘There is increasing evidence that outdated systems provide favourable conditions that allow the legionella bacteria to grow.’
REM solar thermal systems are different as water is heated to a temperature that kills the bacteria before use so that the bacteria cannot bloom. They also make the best use of energy as they only heat the water being used, rather than constantly re-heating old water.
‘When selecting your solar thermal system make sure you have selected the safest, most cost effective solar thermal system available to you,’ explains Denis.
