Jan. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (http://www.ncihc.org) today announced its participation at this year’s DiversityRx conference, a national biannual forum on a broad spectrum of topics related to cultural competence, language access and the reduction of health disparities among vulnerable populations. The theme of the Eighth National Conference on Quality Health Care for Culturally Diverse Populations is “Achieving Equity in an Era of Innovation and Health System Transformation.”

The NCIHC Home for Trainers workshop will take place as part of a block of sessions entitled, ‘Interpreter Training in Tight Times: Finding the Time, Money, and Support’ at the Eighth National Conference on Quality Health Care for Culturally Diverse Populations which will take place on March 12, 2013 in Oakland, California. The workshop will be presented by Erin Rosales, a member of the NCIHC Standards and Training Committee and Co-Lead for the Home for Trainers – Webinars work group. Erin is the Director of Interpreter Development for Connecting Cultures, Inc.  In addition to the workshop, NCIHC will host a table with language access resources in the exhibit area.  For more information about our session, visit http://dx.confex.com/dx/13/webprogram/Paper4200.html.

The NCIHC developed its National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training Programs as healthcare organizations became more aware of the challenge that language barriers place on their staff and patients.  Looking for innovative ways to meet these ever-growing demands, standards for training programs ensure that interpreters who complete training programs which meet the guidelines set forth by the National Standards for Interpreter Training Programs will have been exposed to a high quality and rigorous program of study.  The NCIHC’s National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training Programs are the result of several years of research and consensus-building, and provide guidance for trainers, curriculum developers, interpreters, and purchasers of interpreter services about what content, methodologies and administrative structures should be used to prepare healthcare interpreters for entry into service.
