Jan. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- A celebration of life service to honor Northern Arizona University assistant football coach and former NFL quarterback Jeff Lewis will be held on January 19 at 11 a.m. at Christ’s Church of the Valley’s Scottsdale Campus. Lewis passed away on Jan. 5 in Phoenix.

CCV’s Scottsdale Campus is located at 19030 N. Pima Rd., just north of the Loop 101 freeway near Legacy Drive.

The celebration of life service will be conducted by CCV’s Scottsdale Campus Pastor Travis Brown, Lewis’ teammate at NAU in 1995. Brown succeeded Lewis as the Lumberjacks’ quarterback at NAU from 1996-99 prior to a six-year career in the NFL from 2000-05.

Lewis, 39, served on the NAU coaching staff as the wide receivers coach during the 2012 season after serving on Louisville’s coaching staff from 2007-09. He had a standout career as a quarterback for the Lumberjacks from 1991-95 and was inducted into the NAU Hall of Fame in 2003. Lewis enjoyed a seven-year career as a quarterback in the NFL for the Denver Broncos (1996-98), Carolina Panthers (1999-2001) and New Orleans Saints (2001-02) after being selected by the Broncos in the fourth round (100th overall) in the 1996 draft. He was part the Broncos’ consecutive championship teams (1997-98) in Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII.

Lewis finished his career at NAU ranked second on the school's all-time lists for passing yards (9,639), touchdowns (67), completions (785), attempts (1,315) and completion percentage (59.6). He also holds the FCS/Division I-AA career record for interception avoidance with a figure of 1.82 interceptions per 100 passes. Lewis earned third-team All-America and second-team All-Big Sky honors as a junior in 1994.

Lewis grew up in North Scottsdale and was a 1991 graduate of Horizon High School, where he starred on the Huskies’ football, basketball and baseball teams.

In lieu of flowers, Lewis’ family is asking that donations be made to the Jeff Lewis FCA Camp Scholarship Fund to send children and coaches to football camp in the summer. For more information, please go to azfca.org.
