Mexican Renewable Energy Market Set to Soar in 2013

Jan. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- Despite the recent change in government, the mood for the continued growth of the sector remains optimistic. With no feed in tariffs liable to change there are many factors driving momentum beyond political parameters:

·         Vast Untapped Resources- Mexico has an estimated 45GW solar potential and 71GW wind power potential

·         Ambitious Targets-Mexico beat its own renewable energy target by generating 26% of electricity from renewables in 2012, aiming for 35% by 2024

·         Growing Electricity Demand- Mexico will require an estimated 27GW of new capacity over the next 15 years to cover growing demand

·         Stable Investment Environment- Private clean energy investment in Mexico increased by 273% in 2010, with Latin America attracting $63.1billion investment in 2011

·         An Emerging Manufacturing Superpower- With heavy industry relocating to Mexico opportunities for commercial scale generation are huge

·         Committed to Sustainable Growth - Mexico has become only industrialising nation to put into national legislation long-term climate targets

Expansion of wind power operations in particular has been hitting the news, with Enel Green Power connecting a 70 MW farm (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3745446749/enel...) to the gird in Oaxaca and Vestas recently receiving a 54MW turbine order (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3938111615/vest...) from an unnamed customer. With the governments optimism at reaching a wind energy target of 12GW by 2020 (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3210966620/mexi...) and commitment to the market expressed by key players including Iberdrola (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3238393367/iberdrola-boss-signals-wind-sell-off-in-non-core-nations-but-sticks-firmly-with-latam) and Suzlon (http://cleantechnica.com/2012/06/03/suzlons-bold-bid-to-invest-3b-in-mexico-wind-farms/), a key challenge will now be expanding developments beyond the Oaxaca region.

Momentum behind the solar industry is also growing with Sonora Energy Group de Hermosillo (SEGH) working on a 39 MW photovoltaic plant (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3330223306/sonora-energy-unveils-ambitious-mexican-pv-plans) and LG set to supply a 100MW solar park (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3327007448/lg-to-install-100mw-solar-project-in-mexico) also in Sonora. The State of Zacatecas recently unveiled a 200KW system (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3265426105/governor-miguel-alonso-reyes-inaugurates-solar-park-at-zacatecas-international-airport) at the international airport, and Chihuahua State has enlisted Schneider to build a 250KW system (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3493281091/schneider-install-solar-plant-in-chihuahua) to power a local hospital.

Large commercial companies are also looking to renewables to avoid increasing energy bills and to fulfil ambitious CSR targets. For example the food processing company Palsgard now supply 85% of their energy usage (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/2799968849/mexican-food-company-palsgaard-installs-new-pv-system-in-bid-to-become-carbon-neutral) via solar energy, whilst Grupo Bimbo recently opened a 90MW wind farm (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3166742777/grupo-bimbo-ceo-opens-the-piedra-larga-wind-farm-that-will-supply-electricity-to-45-mexican-facilities) to power 45 of its facilities.

Domestic markets are also emerging, especially for roof mounted PV systems (http://www.scoop.it/t/wind-solar-mexico/p/3777571948/domestic-solar-energy-generation-increasingly-viable-in-mexico), due to the DAC tariff forcing the bills of high power consumer’s sky high.

On May 28- 30 the 2nd annual Mexican International Renewable Energy Congress (http://www.greenpowerconferences.com/EF/?sSubSystem=Prospectus&sEventCode=MIREC2013&sSessionID=1aa53eee9fef7b126eee8832b6ce1149-15535725) will return to Mexico City to unite this rapidly expanding Mexican industry with global project developers, investors and service providers.
