Now that we got that out of the way, what should a guy do for skin care in winter months?
Moisturizing (and doing it more) is the key to combating dry skin. If you are used to using moisturizers once a day and your skin is still dry, maybe it’s time to start using it twice a day to make up for the loss of moisture in the air. If you think drinking more water (while good for you internally) will do the trick, think again. Drinking more water has little or no affect on your skin’s moisture. So, drowning yourself in more water or beer isn’t going to do much for your skin.
Do you need to change to a winter moisturizer as some suggest?
If it is a good moisturizer that is full of nutrients and botanicals, for most guys that will be enough? For a lot of guys, just using a moisturizer is a stretch, but having to change in the winter? Not many guys are going to go to those extremes. If you are buying an inferior brand of skin care in the summer, chances are you are just going to be buying (or using) an inferior brand in the winter so it's not going to make much of a difference.
Take Mug’s two face creams – Mugnificent and Silver Fox Face Rescue Cream – the main ingredients are Hemp and Grape Seed Oils and these oils are rich in Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3 and 6) that prevent moisture loss by penetrating skin cells. EFA’s have been proven to play a role in skin aging and maintaining a healthy moisture balance.
Add to that, Safflower Seed Oil and Quaternized Wheat Protein which are Natural Moisturizing Factors that prevent water loss and dry flaking skin, along with all the other 45+ natural ingredients in these creams – there isn’t anything better, winter or summer, that you can put on your skin. Using regular bar soap may also add to your dry skin winter woes. So, switching to a milder soap with soothing botanicals like Aloe Vera may be just what your skin needs in the dry winter months.
Bottom line: simply use a premium moisturizer and twice a day if your skin is really dry. You may also want to try applying moisturizer while the skin is still wet as that will have a positive affect on extra dry skin.
The Winter Sun
Another factor one must consider for the winter is the sun’s affect on the skin. Although it is not as powerful as it is in the summer months, the sun is still a factor and using a natural sunscreen is important to maintaining healthy skin (I am not a big fan of lathering up with chemicals because they actually do end up in your body and one only knows the affects it has on cell mutation).
However, the sun does play an important role on the skin (and your overall health) and for all the bad press it gets, the vitamin D from the sun produces is important to your overall health and many people do not get enough from their Big Macs and fries and need the sun’s Vitamin D.
And don’t forget to put moisturizer on your hands as that also gets drier in the winter from the constant washing you are suppose to do to combat the flu, so don’t forget to moisturize your mitts.
Long Hot Showers
We all know how great it feels to stand under a steaming hot shower on a cold winter day. That instant gratification can play havoc on your skin as is breaks down the lipid barriers of your skin which can lead to the loss of moisture. So, take a quick shower and do the other things you normally do in the shower elsewhere.
So, there you have it. If all else fails, move to a tropical climate.
