PRLog -- Tank sweeps are typically services provided to find buried objects and under ground storage tanks by purchasers of commercial or residential property. Tank sweeps are usually performed using a metal detector or soil magnetometer. Typically the sensitivity is low and provide a lot of false positives indicating that something is buried underground. A few years ago a property seller contacted Environmental Systems to determine if a tank was buried underground. The prospective buyer hired a company to do a " Tank Sweep" and the contractor identified a buried structure. Environmental Systems excavated the area and found that a old cast iron radiator was reason for the reading. The homeowner ended up excavating most of the driveway to investigate the false positive reading.. If Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was used for the tank sweep the object would have been identified as a radiator and no excavation would have been needed. Ground Penetrating radar can map out underground utilities, plumbing, underground storage tanks, dry wells, septic systems, pump vaults and just about any buried structure down to 15-20 feet below surface grade level. Plastic and non metallic structures can be identified including clay pipe.
