The Chrysler/Cummins partnership was first formed in 1985, when the companies began developing a new 5.9L inline six-cylinder turbo diesel engine. The engine was later launched in 1989 and produced 160 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. In 2004 the Cummins engine was named to Ward’s “Ten Best Engines” list, and their engines of today are able to double the output of the original version, underscoring the company’s dedication to continued improvement and innovation.
The latest 2013 Ram Heavy Duty trucks are equipped with the High-Output 6.7-litre Cummins turbo diesel engine, which pumps out 385 hp and a class leading 850 lb-ft of torque. Cummins equipped Ram trucks make up almost 80% of Ram’s Heavy Duty truck sales.
The Cummins engine also features a best in class oil change interval, as it’s able to go up to 24,000 intervals between changes and is B20 fuel capable. The latest engine includes a number of groundbreaking new features including duel inlet “Ram Active Air”, which adjusts inductions based on driving conditions to provide the optimum performance possible.
