Recently, two doctors from the hospital, Dr. Sharona Ross and Dr. Alexander Rosemurgy, attended the 100th annual American College of Surgeons Conference (ACS) in Chicago, Illinois. At the conference, the doctors presented two surgical videos. One video was regarding Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site(LESS) Toupet Fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The other video was regarding the Standardization of LESS Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) which details the steps of this innovative surgical approach. The presentation was well received by the audience and they asked many questions directed at the doctors about the practice techniques and specialty in the area of Minimally Invasive Surgery. Mentees of the doctors presented two posters focusing on the patient perception of women in surgery and the subject of gender equality of women surgeons.
Equality of women surgeons is a topic of particular interest as more women pursue medical careers and face the challenges of equality in the workplace. As a further note, the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) Conference was held in conjunction with the American College of Surgeons Conference. That gave Dr. Ross the perfect opportunity to speak with many of the members who are becoming more involved in the planning of the fourth annual Women in Surgery Conference, which will be hosted by UCSF, in San Francisco, California on June 7-6, 2013.
