Saving the Rhino, One Calf at a Time

RhinoProtect has saved rhinos with its horn treatment. They have now rescued two orphan rhinos. The calves have been relocated to Inverdoorn Game Reserve, where they will be provided sanctuary and peace through the organisation’s efforts.

Jan. 8, 2013 - PRLog -- Two rhinos have been rescued by RhinoProtect and provided sanctuary and peace through the organisation’s efforts. Established only a year ago, RhinoProtect has saved rhinos with its innovative and revolutionary horn treatment. Consisting of a barium-laced dye, it causes the horn to colour internally and become unfit for human consumption – making it useless to poachers, without affecting the animal. Orphaned after their mothers fell victim to poachers, the calves have been relocated to Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Iziba Safari Lodge. RhinoProtect’s next step will be to establish an orphanage for rhinos at Inverdoorn, providing space and protection for rhinos who have survived poaching.

With its 10 000 hectares Inverdoorn  offers the rhinos a home that allows them to roam free, as it is the reserve’s aspiration to provide animals the space their natures dictate and to re-introduce endemic species back into the Karoo. Through RhinoProtect’s pioneering efforts, and together with Inverdoorn, they hope to curb the terrible increase in rhino poaching and horn trade.
