Jan. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- Are You Accepting Life on its Terms or Making it on Your Terms?

The first week of January.  The beginning of another year. What will make this year different than any other year?

January 2nd of every year is National Motivation & Inspiration Day.  I had it passed by The United States Congress after the tragic events of 9-11-01.  Since January 1st is taken and everyone knows that the 1st is New Year’s Day, I though the 2nd would be the appropriate day to ask people, especially young adults, to establish their personal goals.

Did you set goals for yourself?  Did your kids?  Do you know anyone that did?  Supposedly, somewhere , someone has stated that the “Top 3%” of performers establish their goals every year and write them down.  If this is true, why wouldn’t teach every single one of our kids how to do this?

As a management, leadership and sales trainer and as a executive and personal coach, teacher and educator I know of very few successful companies that do NOT have goals.  There are annual goals that are established as Year-Over-Year (YOY) growth.  The anticipation varies by industry, but the financial growth expectation is anywhere from 3% to 40% depending upon the industry and category.

How do we measure our personal growth?  We all know that “money can’t buy you happiness,” but it sure makes life easier.  My friend and mentor Zig Ziglar, who passed away in December had a quote that said something to the effect that, “Money isn't the most important thing in life, but it's reasonably close to oxygen on the "gotta have it" scale.

So, as we start another year, 2013, how is it going to be different?  In my audiobook, “A New Year and a New You!” which was just released for the New Year, I also refer to the definition of insanity, which we have all heard by now, right?  What is the definition of insanity? “Doing the SAME thing over and over again and expecting a DIFFERENT result.”

That would lead me to believe then that unless you are “insane” you should probably do something DIFFERENT in order to expect a DIFFERENT result.  Right? And considering only the “Top 3%” establish, write down and track their personal goals, that leaves approximately 97% of the population to do that something different.  Write down and track your goals. As I describe in our Motivation Monday Youtube Video: http://youtu.be/2_g17rG1SKQ

Some might think and say or even argue that creating and tracking goals is too stressful and structured.  You need to “live in the moment.”  Well. I suggest to you that these concepts are not mutually exclusive.  You can do both, live in the moment, as well as having personal goals set for yourself.  The point I make is whether you are accepting life on its terms and reacting to everything in your life or are you being proactive, “taking action to make things happen” and making your life on your terms?

Each of us has a choice to make and we certainly have the choice to teach and empower our children how to take control of their lives or not.
