Christmas Cheer Board
The precursor to the Cheer Board was originally established by several Winnipeg area churches in 1919. The charity was created in order to provide Christmas Hampers and toys to the widows and children of soldiers lost in WWI.
The church groups continued to operate for several years before turning their attention to the many other families that needed assistance during the holiday season. As the charity expanded the churches began to work together to coordinate the growing project. In the mid-1940s, the churches formed one organization. The newly formed Christmas Cheer Board was then able to coordinate charitable activities to avoid duplications and to better serve the area.
The Cheer Board now provides assistance to local families that qualify for Employment Income Assistance in addition to many lower income working families. Over half of all the food and toys the Cheer Board distributes are donated by individuals and companies, and the rest is purchased by the charity. The Cheer Board is comprised of almost 5,000 volunteers, including school children and seniors. Volunteers make, pack, and deliver all donations.
