Jan. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- Along with other families in the community, the Wojciks were heartbroken by the events that took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
As Richard explains, “I remember the first day it appeared on the News at night before I was going to bed and thinking to myself when I saw what happened, "This is absolutely horrible! This will affect a lot of people worldwide. I have to do something in memory of them".  I had such a heavy heart for everyone.

I am a dad, I have been blessed with two beautiful healthy children and thought, that could have been me who lost a child; or I could have lost my wife; or I could have been one of the firefighters, police officers or paramedics having to deal with all the emotions.

As well, I empathize with the funeral directors and embalmers who comforted the families and dealt with the devastation of what just happened in their community. It is so difficult to be a funeral director and embalmer in a smaller community, as you come to know everyone and become one large family. I couldn't imagine how any one of them must have felt. “

With Richard’s numerous years of experience in funeral service and arranging very large funerals, he wanted to be able to offer the opportunity for ANYONE without having to turn someone away due to lack of space, to be able to come and be able to take part, remember and express their own grief for the loss of all these people, their families and friends, but also to offer support to others.

He began arranging and planning for the Service and confirmed with Winnipeg Police Chief Devon Clunis, with whom he’s worked numerous times in his position of Chaplain with the WPS, who offered his support.  He contacted Winnipeg Fire-Paramedic Chaplain, Mark Young, who agreed to officiate at the non-denominational service and arranged to have numerous members of the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band present.

Planning is still underway, however the Wojcik family wanted to ensure the public was invited to this Open Memorial Service.
