Delta Sigma Theta kick-off Celebration:Marking 100 Years of Service with Founders Day Extravaganza

Jan. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- One hundred years ago 22 college women founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and today the sorority has more than 250,000 members in the U.S., and in eight international chapters. Chapters pay tribute to the ideas of the Founders and the mission of the organization by conducting political action, presenting physical and mental health programs, executing educational and economic development programs, and serving internationally.

“Delta is the single largest African-American women’s organization, so it’s no wonder that centennial celebrations will take place throughout the year in metro Detroit, to commemorate the social action movement that began on January 13, 1913, on the campus of Washington, D.C.’s historically black Howard University,” said Beverly A. Gray, president of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter.

The keynote speaker is Delta member, Ann Claire Williams, United States Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the gala entertainment is “neo soul” musical artist Eric Roberson, renowned for his smooth sounds.

“We look forward with pride to celebrating this centennial moment with this extravaganza, a gathering of Detroit’s most prominent citizens, as we hear from a dynamic and relevant speaker and celebrate the historical significance of the day that 22 dynamic young women envisioned this sisterhood of service,” said Clarice L. Ogilvie Posey, chair of the 2013 Founders Day celebration.

“The gala concert will top-off our Founders Day centennial celebration, as neo soul phenomenon Eric Roberson wows the crowd with his blend of smooth soul and dance beats,” said Clara Jenkins, chair of the Founders Day gala. “We hope the public will join us as we celebrate the beginning of the next 100 years.”

More than 1,000 Deltas, including elected officials, educators, business and community leaders, along with their guests, are expected to attend the gala which will include a tribute program, sit-down dinner, live musical entertainment and much more.  Tickets are $100.
