Follow on Google News | German Inspired Wheel Designs Make Comeback in Car Scene from ESM WheelsWheels from companies like ESM Wheels out of Southern California are making a new trend with the Japanese Import Car Enthusiast community. Originally from DTM race machines, these wheels are making their way to Civics, EVOs, Subarus and more.
By: Bean Garage ESM Wheels, based in Southern California, is hitting the market with its German inspired wheels in modern sizes. They fit aggressive on most cars, a look that is very popular these days. Bringing the wheel out close to the fender wall creates a clean, streamlined look that can only be had with a lowered car height and wide wheels with a low offset. As trends seem to go in cycles, it was actually only a matter of time before this trend of applying vintage German styling to import cars. Originally, a company by the name of BBS Wheels kept to their original design of a mesh face with many spokes and exposed hardware. However, the price of these wheels are prohibitively expensive for the common car tuner. ESM Wheels came to the rescue with affordable one piece cast wheels in designs that are timeless. One of their most famous designs is a flat faced wheel that is based on the DTM German professional race cars from the 1980's. Cars like the E36 BMW M3 would be equipped with these lightweight wheels not only for their looks, but for the cooling advantage that the design gives to the car's brakes. ESM released their version of this wheel in popular bolt patterns and sizes from 15"-17" in diameter. Another great design that is offered is the 002R, a mesh faced design with a large step lip and low offset to get an aggressive wheel fitment. Being a one piece cast wheel, cost is kept low since it can be manufactured in great quantities in a variety of popular sizes and bolt patterns. The wheels also come with a center cap to cover your wheel's lug nuts and it keeps the mesh design of the wheel going fluid to the center. Can we even try to guess what the next tuning school of fashion will be? It's tough to say, though it looks like the market is headed towards a more functional, raw racing prepared appearance. With the recent giant popularity of electric vehicles, we see the trend going to exactly the opposite of that - a bit of a rebellious gesture towards modern trends.
