Jan. 3, 2013 - PRLog -- New Delhi, 3rd January 2013:- Hindustan Tin Works (HTW) Limited, the leading Can manufacturing company in India recently organized a Creative Design Workshop for rag pickers at Bhopura, near the Ghazipur landfills in association with Chintan Environmental research and Action Group (NGO). At the workshop Dr. Vivek Prasad, Designer and Art Consultant- Aranya Earth Craft created sculptures out of metal scraps. The workshop was successful and saw about 40 women and 10 men participants. All of them spared 2 hours from their daily life for the past 14 days, and learnt the basics of creating some beautiful artifacts.

Mr. Atit Bhatia, Senior Vice President of Hindustan Tin Works Limited was present at the final session of the workshop to encourage the participants. He was impressed by their creativity and appreciated them for their hard work. He also interacted with them asking them to continue the work and come up with more innovative ideas.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, ‘The underlying theme of the Canvironment Week is to uplift the lives of rag pickers, who are identified as the cog in the recycling wheel. Through this workshop we wanted to provide them skill based training on creating products from metal and tin scrap. This, we believe, would enable them to garner relevant skills and know-how to create newer products and use the same to financially support themselves and their families. We are happy with the response and hope to carry forward this initiative year after year.’

Dr. Vivek Prasad added, ‘We started with the tutorial classes followed by the practical classes. The response has been extremely good. Women came forward to make small but very beautiful artifacts like wall hanging, mugs, flowers etc.’

This noble cause also became a medium for the betterment of rag pickers. Under 'Canvironment Week', the creative design workshop is organized for the rag pickers where they are given training to make artifacts out of the metal scrap, which are later would be put on sale at an exhibition, the amount of which goes directly to the participants of the workshop.
