By: The Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Somerset, NJ, January, 2013 – Fox Rehabilitation announced today the availability of a program that provides free exercise classes to seniors in the community. The Fox Better Living Exercise Class has been proven effective to increase senior’s leg strength, walking ability, and balance, and will minimize the primary risk factors associated with falls in seniors who are at a risk of falling. Led by a trained exercise physiologist, The Fox Better Living Exercise Class is open to participants aged 65 to 100. Classes are 60 minutes in duration, and are held twice weekly for 12 weeks. Each participant must undergo strength, mobility, and balance assessments prior to participation. Classes are currently being held at The Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence, 350 DeMott Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873 “For someone who really doesn’t do any exercise, this really got me into getting my body in motion,” said Mildred Kosstrin, 82. “I feel so much better physically now.” The Fox Better Living Exercise Class consists of 12 or more dynamic exercises of graded intensity. Up to 15 seniors participate in each class. Seniors also receive individualized attention from the program coordinator so that each participant can maximize their progression. “Whether you’re an Olympic athlete, or a 90 year old man or woman, in order for exercises to be effective they have to be progressed, and they have to be performed with enough intensity, frequency and duration to allow for physiologic improvements in our musculoskeletal and neurological system,” said Tim Fox, PT, DPT, GCS, Founder and Executive Director of Fox Rehabilitation. “Exercise is good preventative medicine, and it can be effective in a social, group setting.” The Fox Better Living Exercise Class has been proven effective to increase leg strength, mobility, and balance in seniors at low to moderate risk of falling. There is no cost to seniors for this program. The program is funded by Fox Rehabilitation, in conjunction with The Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living as a community outreach initiative.
