Flagler County, FL – The Rotary Club of Flagler Beach and the Flagler County Airport will be hosting the Race of the Runways at the Flagler County Airport, Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 8:30 AM.

This event is part of the Palm Coast Race series and is co-sponsored by the Palm Coast Observer and the Flagler County Tourist Development Council.  The Rotary Club of Flagler Beach has teamed up with other health and wellness initiatives to help get people “moving”. There is a 1-mile and 2-mile option for walkers, as well as a ¼ mile Kiddie Dash for youth (1yr – 9 yr).  All walkers will receive a finishers award “I DID IT!” button.  The event is not just for competitors. People of all ages are encouraged to use this event to set a goal and Just Move!

The Rotary Club recommends a donation of $10 for Kiddie Dashers, $20 for Walkers in the 1-mile and 2-mile courses and the fully supported 5K is $25. “Pre-flight check-in” to pick-up participation packets and event tee shirts and the final time to pre-register is February 8, 2013 from 4-7 PM at High Jackers Restaurant at the Airport. Day of event registration begins at 7:00 AM at the airport with a suggested donation of $30 for 5K runners (cash or check). Goodie bags and t-shirts for the first 250 paid registrations (adult size shirts only). Custom awards will be presented to the top three finishers in the male and female age groups, 5-year categories, as well as Best Male and Female Overall, Masters Male and Masters Female (over 40). Best time (male or female) will be presented with #1 for our next event along with free registration.

This is an aeronautical themed event to include: helicopters, flyovers, resident planes on display and a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually run/walk on an Airport Runway. Last year’s event Best Overall winner Jose Musso and Palm Coast Race Series Male Overall winner listed this event as his “favorite of the races” stating it is the fastest course and because it is in an open area you can see all of the runners and where they are on the course.

The funds raised from this event help support the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach projects.  Some of these projects include: Scholarships for adults and students, Project Share - which provides holiday gifts for needy families and dictionaries for every 3rd grade child, Flagler County Education Foundation, world-wide polio eradication and the Youth Exchange Program just to name a few.

The Rotary Club of Flagler Beach was chartered in November 1991 and currently has 32 members; we are part of Rotary District 6970. Our membership is a most compatible group of local business and community leaders from the fields of business, law, education, real estate, and government; including those who have retired from successful pursuits in these fields. During the winter, our attendance swells with the coming of our Snow-Birds. All are welcome, of course, and are included in all our social and civic activities. Our Program Speakers typically address a variety of interesting and important topics.
