Hackensack City Council Designates State Street Lots as 'Area in Need of Redevelopment'
At the December 18, 2012 Hackensack City Council meeting Ordinance No. 464-12 was introduced to designate several blocks on State Street between Warren Street and Bergen Street as an area in need a redevelopment. This is the first step prior to project approval and construction on Main Street in Hackensack.
This area is entirely within the boundaries of the Main Street Rehabilitation Plan approved by the City Council in June 2012. This designation paves the way for a project with high-density residential and mixed-use components in line with the goals set forth in the Rehabilitation Plan.
"This is the first step towards seeing shovels in the ground and real change happening on Main Street," stated Mayor Mike Melfi. "I am confident that in the coming months we are going to be announcing new projects that will transform our downtown and really begin the process of returning Hackensack to the center of activity in Bergen County."

Ramapo College Affiliates with Terrie O'Connor Realtors Real Estate School to Offer Real Estate Salesperson and Broker Pre-Licensure Courses
Ramapo College of New Jersey has announced its affiliation with the new Terrie O'Connor Realtors Real Estate School located in Ramsey, New Jersey to prepare students for successful careers as licensed Real Estate Salespersons and licensed Real Estate Brokers.
Upcoming classes begin on January 7, 2013 and again on February 4 and March 4, 2013. The curriculum is approved through the NJ Real Estate Commission and provides students with the Pre-licensing educational requirements necessary to pursue the New Jersey Real Estate Salesperson License or the New Jersey Real Estate Broker License.
"Students and adult learners alike are facing a challenging job market in this tough economic period," said Rosa Diaz-Mulryan, assistant vice president for the Center for Innovative and Professional Learning at the college. Assistance For Small Business Owners Hurt By Hurricane Sandy
The New Jersey Small Business Development Centers (NJSBDC) network and Small Business Administration Office of Disaster Assistance specialists are teaming up to provide on-site assistance for small business owners who experienced property damage and/or other economic injury as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
“SBA disaster assistance specialists will collaborate with our NJSBDC experts at various locations throughout the state,” said NJSBDC Chief Executive Officer-State Director Brenda Hopper.
“This dual effort will begin promptly in order to ensure that small businesses receive the best possible guidance at this time,” added NJSBDC Chief Operating Officer-Associate State Director Deborah Smarth.
NJSBDC and SBA experts will assist small business owners with the application process. Business physical disaster loans are available for businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property. In addition, economic injury disaster loans are available as working capital to help small businesses to meet ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a result of the disaster.
“Some of these special Hurricane Sandy SBA-NJSBDC assistance operations will begin at the end of this week and during the week of November 12,” said Hopper. “They will continue for several months.”

HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley Appoints Key Executives
HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley, a new full service, world-class hospital scheduled to open in the spring of 2013, has filled two pivotal leadership positions with the appointment of Laura E. Cima as Chief Nursing Officer and Anthony M. Esposito, Jr. as Chief Financial Officer.

Laura E. Cima, RN, MBA, NEA-BC, FACHE, of Lodi, is a seasoned nurse executive with extensive, diverse clinical and hospital operations experience. She is transferring to the position of Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for the Pascack Valley network hospital from the Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, where she has served as a member of the executive staff in two positions: Vice President, Clinical Operations since February, 2011 and Vice President of Nursing, 2000 to 2011. Cima began her career at HackensackUMC in 1979 and held several nurse management positions including Director of Nursing, Surgical Services/IV Team (1982-86), Resource Nursing Director (1986-96) and Administrative Director of Nursing (1996-2000) before being named to the executive staff as Vice President for Nursing.
Cima is a doctoral candidate at the Seton Hall University Graduate School of Medical Education. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University, along with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Felician College. She has co-edited the first and second editions of the Nurses’ Role in Medication Safety and has authored several articles. In addition, Laura was selected as one of 35 nurses in the country to the Nurse Advisory Council to the Joint Commission for three consecutive terms.
As a member of the HackensackUMC leadership team, she has been a patient advocate and instrumental in reducing third party payer denials of medically necessary procedures by 39%, establishing the state’s first pilot program to place Medicaid patients in appropriate care settings and developing preferred provider relationships with sub-acute, long-term care and hospice facilities.
Anthony M. Esposito, Jr., CPA of Avondale, Pennsylvania, has more than 20 years of financial management experience in the healthcare industry. He is joining HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley from the Atlanticare Health System in Egg Harbor where he has served as Executive Director of Corporate Finance for the $750 million organization (that includes the 567-bed Atlanticare Regional Medical Center) since 2011.
