In the year 2000, then four-year-old cancer patient Alex Scott set up her first lemonade stand to raise money for money for childhood cancer research. Her first stand was set up in West Harford Connecticut, her home town. The stand was an overwhelming success and raised over $2,000 for the cause. The stand was so successful that it became an annual tradition, and even continued after Alex and her family relocated to Pennsylvania where Alex was receiving treatment. Alex Scott unfortunately lost her battle with cancer in 2004 at the age of eight and the charity continues on in her memory. Volunteers across the country hold Alex’s Lemonade Stands during the same weekend in June as the original stand, every year. The organization is now a registered charity and has to date raised over 55 million dollars for pediatric cancer research. It funds over 250 research projects in the United States.
