American Society of Music Arrangers & Composers Celebrate 75 years at Anniversary on January 27

Celebrate with the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers
By: ASMAC

Dec. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES -- On January 13, 1938, a group of composers, arrangers and orchestrators writing music for movies, being dissatisfied with the lack of appreciation for their efforts, decided to band together and form an organization to promote their general interests, further the progress of our art, establish a closer bond among members of our profession, and promote a mutual understanding with our contemporaries.  They named the group "The American Society of Music Arrangers" (ASMA), the predecessor to ASMAC.

In 1987 the name ASMA was changed to ASMAC, a belated recognition of the fact that most members were also practicing composers. The membership has now grown to over 300 and the goals and camaraderie are also continuing to expand by welcoming members who are, or have been, active in the preparation of music for movies, theatre, recording, television and live performances. Monthly luncheons include a broad range of guest speakers; Golden Score and Award recipients have included Elmer Bernstein, Spud Murphy, Henry Mancini, John Williams, David, Randy & Thomas Newman, Irwin Kostal, Van Alexander, Herbie Hancock, Diane Warren, Bill Holman, and Marc Shaiman. Scholarships in the name of Don Costa, Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins have been presented and over 100 Master Classes and workshops have been conducted through the years.

ASMAC invites the music industry to join with us Sunday, January 27th beginning at 11:30am at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City to celebrate ASMAC’s 75th Anniversary, hosted by award winning composer Michael Giacchino.  The exciting day will include a reunion of members, current and past officers and board members, Golden Score, President’s Award and Irwin Kostal Award recipients and their families, an exhibit of historic documents, including photographs and scores; special guest speakers with brief reflections on the past 75 years, retrospective videos, and special guests including Vam Alexander, Larry Blank, Bruce Broughton, Jorge Calandrellli, John Clayton, Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Mike Lang, Conrad Pope, Chris Riddle, Tim Simonec. Frank Sinatra Jr.  and more.
