Dec. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- Duet Bakery, renowned for speciality cakes Brooklyn, will be helping customers celebrate St. Nick by offering an assortment of holiday themed treats to honor this historic bishop of Turkey.  December 6th marks St. Nicholas Day, a day celebrating the 4th century Saint hailing from what is now known as Turkey.

The legends around this sainted figure are numerous, but all display his generosity, caring for others, and faithfulness.  Santa Claus actually takes his original form from St. Nicholas, and in many countries he his the central gift giving figure.

St. Nicholas was a native of the port city Patara, Greece and spent most of his life in what is now Turkey (which was very Greek in heritage).  He is the patron saint of sailors, children, and archers.  His remains, honored as relics, are in two locations: Bari and Venice. He is revered and honored by Catholics, Lutherans, Orthodox Christians, and Anglicans.

In the United States, among various other countries, although the day is not as big as Christmas, it is still a day to celebrate with gifts, usually for children.  Children will set out a shoe or stocking on December 5th and awake on December 6th to a shoe or stocking filled with fruit, little toys, candy, or coins. This stems from a popular folk tale centered around St. Nick.

There was a poor man with three daughters. He didn’t have enough dowry for his daughters to wed.   This meant that his daughters would most likely end up leading a life of slavery or prostitution.  Upon learning this, St. Nicholas threw a bag of gold in through the window for three consecutive nights, and each time the bag would land in the stockings that were drying on the window sill.

During the Feast of St. Nicholas, generosity and sharing are predominant.  The gifts received that morning should be shared by all.  Another tradition, one Duet Bakery wedding cake Brooklyn specialists were particularly interested in is the making Speculaas, a ginger spiced shortbread cookie often cut and decorated to look like the saint himself!

On St. Nicholas day, you can often find him visiting schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and churches.  This reinforces the focus on giving and caring.  Even though gifts are involved, the focus of this gift giving day is the act of giving to others, not just receiving.

Duet Bakery, where you usually go for custom cakes in Brooklyn, is starting the holiday season by offering a number of holiday inspired cookies and other treats to be used as a St. Nick Day gift to loved ones.  And since this is the holiday of sharing, Duet Bakery will gladly create a unique assortment of treats to share during this day of sharing.
