The company was founded by two Harvard Business School  Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Carter Fleiss. The company launched in November 2009 and the website now offers over 60,000 dresses and accessories from over 175 designers such as Badgley Mischka, Vera Wang and Calvin Klein and more. Membership to the Rent the Runway website is free. The site features apparel in sizes 0 to 16, depending on the designer, and each rental includes a back-up size at no additional cost to ensure fit. Customers can get a second dress style with their order for an additional $25. Rent the Runway provides customers with a pre-paid, pre-addressed package to return the dress, and offers a $5 insurance fee to protect against accidents.

Rental prices include the dry cleaning and care of the garments.

The site’s new “Our Runway” feature allows users to browse user generated images of real women in dresses rented from the site — or if you’ve worn a rented dress, you can upload a picture of yourself. The page features hundreds of photos of women at all sorts of events in their rented dresses. Text below each picture tells the browser what the dress is called, the height and size of the woman wearing it and how much it costs to rent or buy. There is also a small heart icon next to the dress to click if you want to add it to your favorites.
