General Motors and Volkswagen may only separated by as little as 1% of the total global auto sales of 80 million vehicles. Toyota’s year-end projections look to reach a combined group production of 10-million units over General Motors’ projected 9.7-million units produced.

In the future Toyota may continue to see stiff competition, however, with VW projected to produce 8.8-million units by year-end, many experts speculate that by 2018 VW could stand a chance at the crown.
