General Motors had long held the top spot but was knocked off by Toyota only a few years ago. General Motors and Volkswagen may only separated by as little as 1% of the total global auto sales of 80 million vehicles. Toyota’s year-end projections look to reach a combined group production of 10-million units over General Motors’ projected 9.7-million units produced.

Toyota looks to continue their positive momentum, although officials said that grabbing hold of the crown isn’t their overall goal. Toyota spokespeople claimed that the company would rather be called the most successful automaker.

The Prius, the world’s premiere hybrid, also cracked the top 20 landing at number 15.  

In the future Toyota may continue to see stiff competition, however, with VW projected to produce 8.8-million units by year-end, many experts speculate that by 2018 VW could stand a chance at the crown.
