Dec. 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Sudbury, Ontario --  “It’s hard to believe that the 2013 Northern Ontario Wheelchair Curling Championship is almost upon us,” says Norm Gervais the owner of MEDIchair Sudbury and coach of Team Prudhomme, Sudbury’s entry in the NOCA (Northern Ontario Curling Association) Wheelchair Provincials being held in Kenora February 22-24, 2013.

“We have restructured the team this year and after a couple of seasons finishing second, we believe that 2013 is our year to win the Northern Ontario Wheelchair Curling Championship.”  Gervais said this year’s team consists of Skip Rick Prudhomme, Third Dennis Duclos, Second Norm Martel and Lead Linda Kontunen (Ft. William CC, Thunder Bay). The National Wheelchair Curling Championship takes place in Ottawa March 24-31. It is hosted by the RA Centre, the largest private, not-for- profit recreation and leisure facility in Canada.

Gervais who volunteers as the coach of Team Prudhomme says that the sport of wheelchair curling could be much bigger in Northern Ontario. “The one thing that has to happen for the sport of curling to evolve is that community curling associations (like the Sudbury Curling Club) need to make their curling rinks wheelchair accessible.”

“I encourage all Northern Ontario residents to come out and watch wheelchair curling.  I think they’ll be pleasantly surprised at the high level of competition that we have in wheelchair curling. Many of these wheelchair curlers are former able bodied athletes. It’s also a lot harder than it looks. First of all there is no sweeping and every curler must throw his/her 40-pound stone sitting in a stationery wheelchair using a curling stick. Each team has four players, one of which must be a female. Some teams also have a spare.”
