Manufacturers and suppliers who were nominated for the Saint-Gobain awards were required to demonstrate innovative efforts to minimise environmental impact through methods such as enhanced energy efficiency and waste reduction. Nominees were also required to demonstrate the economic impact and/or cost savings associated with their project, in addition to the environmental benefits.
ERIKS UK successfully demonstrated how the TCO can assist companies who are looking to reduce their energy consumption, carbon footprint and overall ownership costs. The ERIKS application included a case study for British Gypsum Barrow, showing how the TCO presented the company with specific data regarding the energy usage and the amount of CO2 that would be generated per annum by a) repair, b) switching to IE2 motors, and c) switching to IE3 motors. By selecting the most efficient and ecological option, British Gypsum Barrow’s decision to discontinue use of its current motor this enabled the company to make significant financial savings. The TCO data also revealed that when British Gypsum Barrow upgrade to IE3 motors, they could save approximately +40 tons CO2 and considerable energy costs over seven years.
The award judges praised the ERIKS solution, commenting: “The ERIKS project was a stand out from the pack and demonstrated clear benefits across all three pillars (Social Commitments, Environmental Challenges and Economic Growth). Under Environmental Impact in particular, this tool can clearly demonstrate whole life impact across machinery replace/repair options. ERIKS UK is now looking to deploy the TCO Calculator across all British Gypsum sites and across its entire customer base.”
