PRLog - Dec. 18, 2012 - New Rochelle, NY—The emerging field of Sustainability Science could offer solutions to two critical problems: the global environmental crisis, and the perceived devaluation of a traditional liberal arts education in light of skyrocketing college costs. Sustainability programming is rapidly expanding at institutions of higher education worldwide; and in order to succeed, it must utilize a new system of delivery, rather than a new curriculum, according to an insightful Commentary in Sustainability: The Journal of Record (http://www.liebertpub.com/sus (http://www.liebertpub.com/sus)), a publication of Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers (http://www.liebertpub.com (http://www.liebertpub.com)). The article is available online on the Sustainability: The Journal of Record (www.liebertpub.com/sus) website.

In "Sustainability Science as a Foundation for Higher Education in the Environmental Century (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdfplus/10.1089/SUS.2012...)," Stephen Mulkey, PhD, President, Unity College (Maine), and an environmental scientist, says: "Humanity faces a central choice: live more sustainably on this planet, or face consequences that are incompatible with civilization. The choice really is that stark." He states that college curricula should be preparing students to take action and providing them with the tools they need to create a sustainable civilization. Sustainability programming, however, is generally underfunded and poorly designed at present.

Sustainability Science is a transdisciplinary field that builds on environmental studies programs and integrates knowledge and problem-solving strategies integral to other areas of science, economics, business, and the humanities. It encompasses core competencies in ethics, communication, management, and critical thinking.

“Dr. Mulkey is unequivocally affirming his core belief in Sustainability Science through his actions at Unity College,” says Jamie Devereaux, Editor of Sustainability. “This article and accompanying interview (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdfplus/10.1089/SUS.2012...) provide insight into why he, an ecologist by training, views the humanities and social sciences as integral to this approach.”
