The Band will be playing selective dates in 2013 for local schools and senior homes.
The Kids Like Blues Band Program is about using blues music in a thematic teaching method. They use the lyrics and music as a springboard for teaching academic content standards in reading, writing, listening, speech, social studies, and the visual and performing arts. As they mine the song for opportunities to teach the academic content standards, students choreograph dance moves to the song, learn how to phrase the words correctly and modulate their pitch, tone, intonation, and pronunciation, and work together in an authentic community learning environment to bring each member along as a fully functioning member of our "gigging" band. Featured in the US Department of Education "Teaching Matters" and on KPBS.

Founder Jon Schwartz and Kids Like Blues:
Jon is a teacher at Garrison Elementary in Oceanside, CA: A school for the visual and performing arts. Jon, a musician and full time teacher, devised a teaching program which connects classic blues songs to elementary teaching. In addition, his love for technology had him devise a structured plan to teach his students and parents, the fine art of every day computer use, editing photos, sound, videos and online writing to children and families who had little or no access.
“I pick a song that will fit; it has to have the right level of cadence, syllabication, vocabulary, imagery, and the subject matter has to be “cool” but also rated G, and be ripe for forays into lessons on history and myths, folktales, and culture. Songs I learned years ago like "Deep Elem Blues" and Chuck Berry's "Promised Land" and "Johnny B. Goode" are examples. Next, I print the songs out, and everyone adds it to their song binder. We then point and track to the words several times daily in teacher led whole class groups and student led small groups, with the focus on memorizing the words and how to speak them with the correct pitch, modulation, tone, syllabication, metre, and phrasing.”
“Our goal is to take our work to completion by performing it onstage and recording it together in digital multitrack audio and video editing programs. The students even learn how to operate programs like iMovie, Photoshop, and Garage Band, and so far we've played at a street fair, for a large audience of staff and students at the Cal State San Marcos College of Education, and even on local TV news and KPBS TV (watch these performances on our videos page). We're a real band, and we're learning and rocking! We have about ten songs in our repertoire.”
