On December 22 at 1:00 P.M. a 600-800 foot natural rainbow will be created in the sky over Young Park in conjunction with the end of the Mayan Calendar. The event “A New World Celebration of Life,” will be held in the northwest corner of the park. This free event is coordinated by the Rainbow Around the World Foundation dedicated to La Pinon on behalf of the Las Cruces children in crisis and the community partners who work to create a healthy environment for them to grow.

The rainbow and the event are being established in the spirit of Noah and the covenant from God symbolizing the beginning of a new world. The event sponsors are requesting that people coming to the event to see the rainbow bring the sun with them to insure it will appear. Adults and children wishing to actually walk into the rainbow and see what is actually at the end of the rainbow are advised to bring umbrellas.

Fred Stern (AKA The Rainbowmaker), a local artist will be joined by the Las Cruces Fire Department to pump water into the air to create an artificial rainfall which will refract the sun’s light to create the natural rainbow in the sky. In addition to the rainbow there will be activities for children. Bob and Melody Burns as well as other performing artists will provide entertainment.

Stern has made rainbows as large as 2,000 feet across for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life events, the Make a Wish Foundation, Camp Quality for Children with Cancer, Alzheimer¹s Association, the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Portland Blues Festival supporting the Food Bank, the Potsdam Eutopia Festival, Sweden¹s Stockholm Water Festival, The Hague Appeal for Peace, a Palestinian-Israeli Peace Conference in Israel and Gaza, and the Colorado River Tribes protesting the placement of a nuclear dump site on sacred land. He has also created a natural rainbow over the United Nations Building in NYC as visual metaphor for world peace.  In Las Cruces, he¹s created rainbows for Court Youth Center and Hospice. Details of Stern, rainbow work can be seen at http://www.rainbowmaker.us

A rehearsal of the rainbow will be held at the park at 12:30 P.M. on December 19 at 12:30. The rehearsal is to work out any logistics problems and to supply a photo and or video opportunity for the Press and Media
