Unique habitats such as Tamaulipan Thorn Scrub and lush Sabal Palm groves support populations of some 40 south Texas avian specialties that birding tour participants prize, including Green Jays, Altamira Orioles, Hook-billed Kites, Golden-fronted Woodpeckers, Red-crowned Parrots, Couch’s Kingbirds, Least Grebes, and Plain Chachalacas.
Golden Gate Audubon offers weekly field trips throughout the year. This nine-day South Texas birdwatching tour goes a step beyond, as a chance for participants to spend extended time together on a guided birding tour, as they visit a number of sites of the Rio Grande Valley, including the Laguna Atascosa and Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuges, South Padre Island, and several premier Texas State Parks: Estero Llano Grande, Bentsen Rio Grande, and Falcon. They also venture north to include a King Ranch guided birding tour, and time with endangered Whooping Cranes at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and Rockport. Many of these areas are legendary among birders for consistently attracting unique wildlife.
